Winter, and the learning continues ...
This season has so much to offer in the way of learning. You may only see children sledding, building a snowman and tubing, but there's far more to it than that.
All their senses are alive and involved! Consider the sound of a sled or tube zipping down a hill and the squeaky crunch of snow underfoot. What about the feel of snow, depending on whether it packs good for snowballs or not? And the pure whiteness of it to the eyes!
It may look like your students are just kicking through the snow or playing, but their senses are recording the experience and storing it in the brain ... which makes writing a poem or story about snow much easier.
Kids also learn that even nature settles down for some rest before producing life in the spring again. Trees, plants and vegetation are at rest. Some animals hibernate; others are busier than ever scrounging for food under snow.
Make a list of groups according to their winter habits and habitats -- the bear, elk, fox, mouse, owl, deer, rabbit, toads, etc. Studying this makes great fodder for oral reports or a student-created bulletin board or collage.
And don't forget art! Ask kids to observe the way snow covers things and changes their appearance. Consider the ugly junkyard, broken-down fences and rusty mailboxes. They are transformed by the soft snow and become inspirations for the painter, photographer and those who like to sketch.
Last but not least, encourage students to get outdoors when weather permits. Their physical fitness is key to being good learners, and since we've passed the winter solstice, they've got a bit more light in the evenings. Don't forget to remind them that when the sun does go down, it's a great time to curl up with a good book. And so their learning continues ...
